DMA Discusses Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Cooperation with Fifteen Government Entities

Abu Dhabi – 30th March 2011:  The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) organized a workshop to discuss the environment, health, and safety management system (EHSMS) for the construction sector, as part of its as commitment to partner and cooperate with strategic stakeholders and other governmental entities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.  The workshop was organized by the DMA and the three three municipalities of the Emirate: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, as part of a series of session and workshops offered during the Arabian Construction Week 2011. 

Fifteen Abu Dhabi Government entities participated in the EHSMS workshop including the Department of Economic Development, the Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, Abu Dhabi Health Authority, Environment Authority-Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, Specialized Corporate Zones, Abu Dhabi Education Council, the Center of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi Environment, Health, and Safety center, Civil Defense, and Abu Dhabi Police.

Representatives from the government entities discussed implementing EHS during the different construction phases as per each entity’s regulations and in accordance with the EHS standards.  The responsibilities of each entity before, during, and after construction were also discussed.

The DMA was committed to understanding the requirements of all the stakeholders during the workshop, to ensure the ideal implementation of the EHSMS.  The DMA also highlighted different components of the system and discussed the means that can assist in protecting the health and safety of residential buildings and to ensure the sustainability of the different construction projects.

The Environment, Health, and Safety Management System (EHSMS) will ensure that effective health and safety rules and regulations are implemented on construction sites within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to provide a safer and healthier work environment, and to minimise waste pollution, which will deliver a better quality of life.
